MASA@UNAIR: STRENGTHEN THE UKHUWWAH (BROTHERHOOD) THROUGH EXCHANGE STUDENT PROGRAM

Residing in Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia for 10 days has given 1001 invaluable experience to a total of 8 ISDEV delegates consisting of RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Research) who were flown on 9th December 2017. The academic trip is led by ISDEV Founder, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh who had been appointed as Visiting Professor at Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).

The MASA@UNAIR academic trip was organized by Sekolah Pascasarjana Universitas Airlangga with ISDEV postgraduate students as the main participants. The main objective of the programme is to expose the delegates to academic programmes such as public lectures, colloquium, and research discussion. The programme intended to strengthen the ukhuwwah through religious and social activities such as community services. The programme started with the welcoming ceremony by Deputy Director I of Sekolah Pascasarjana UNAIR, Prof. Dr. Anwar Ma’ruf, Deputy Director II, Dr. Dina Sunyowati and Programme-in-Charge, Dr. Sri Herianingrum.

All participants have a pleasant time with all the activities every day even the schedule is tight. The ISDEV delegates attended Public Lectures delivered by Lecturer from Faculty of Economics and Business UNAIR. The lecturers with their expertise shared their knowledge to ISDEV delegates on “Islamic Economics Paradigm” (Dr. Muhammad Nafik), “The Case against the Islamic Gold Dinar” (Dr. Raditya Sukmana), and “Fiqh Muamalah” (Dr. Imron Mawardi).

In addition, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh as Visiting Professor also delivered the inspiring Guest Lecture on “Contemplating Islamic Economics” and “Knowing Academic Journals” during writing workshop programme at UNAIR. At the same time, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh received an invitation to deliver a Guest Lecture at Universitas Trunojoyo Madura (UTM) Madura on “Assumptions of Contemporary Islamic Economics – A Critical Analysis”. In the same day, one of ISDEV delegates, Raudha Md Ramli presented her topic on “Scarcity of Resources in Islamic Economics: The Case of Negara Brunei Darussalam” during the Colloquium session at UTM Madura. Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh also shared and highlighted the topic on “Humanomics and Global Challenges” at Universitas 17 Augustus 1945 (UNTAG).

The exchange student programme continues with research discussion presented by 7 ISDEV delegates. The first speaker, Siti Maryam Idris presented a topic on “Syariah Risk in Musyarakah Mutanaqisah Home Financing” followed by second speaker, Noor Husna Mohd Shafie, “Cabaran Perjanjian Trans-Pasifik di Malaysia: Satu Sorotan”. The third speaker, Nurul Suhada Ismail shared her topic on “Mekanisme Pengukuhan Sekuriti Makanan Melalui Pertanian Lestari Islam: Pengalaman Malaysia”. Forth speaker, Kamarul Ariffin Ithnan presented his topic on “Matlamat Akhir Pelaku Politik Islam: Analisis Konseptual Berasaskan Hadith-hadith Pilihan”. Fifth and sixth speaker, Syazalie Hirman Ahmad Najib and Mohamad Syukri Jalil presented their paper on “Agama dalam Norma Subjektif Mengikut Teori Tingkah Laku Terancang: Analisis Menurut Perspektif Islam” and “Kajian Pengurusan Tunggakan Sewaan Aset-aset Wakaf di Majlis Agama Islam Negeri (MAIN)” respectively. Last speaker, Raudha Md Ramli presented a topic on “Economic Diversification and Strategies for Negara Brunei Darussalam in Achieving Brunei Vision 2035” The session moderated by Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh and was attended by 3 UNAIR postgraduate students.

ISDEV delegates also had the opportunity to attend the pre-viva presentation (Ujian Kelayakan) presented by Sri Abidah Suryaningsih on topic “Implementasi Mudharabah pada Bank Pembiayaan Rakyat Syariah di Surabaya”. In a meantime, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh also contributed as a Viva examiner to Moch Ivansyah Putra with the topic on “Determinasi Keputusan Pembelian Perumahan Syariah di Jawa Timur”.

Apart from educational activities, ISDEV delegates had the opportunity to visit and experience with communities through a special activity called “Pengabdian Masyarakat di Gresik” which organized by Sekolah Pascasarjana UNAIR and collaboration with Pemerintah Kabupaten Gresik. ISDEV delegates have been welcomed and celebrated by Bupati Kabupaten Gresik (District Officer), Dr. Sambari Halim Radianto and Ir. Abdul Hamid, Ketua Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (DPR) Gresik. Moreover, through the community service programme, ISDEV delegates had a wonderful opportunity to visit Masjid al-Akhbar and Lembaga Amil Zakat Nasional Yatim Mandiri

ISDEV delegates also had the chance to tour UNAIR campus and visit some famous tourist attractions such as Surabaya Mega Grosir, ITC, Tunjungan Plaza, Gua Putih, Madura and book stores to fulfill the enthusiasm travelling in Surabaya. The trip was packed with intellectual and spiritual programme. ISDEV delegates are also performed the prayer congregationally followed by tazkirah session.

ISDEV delegates returned to their hometown on 18th December 2017 and touched down at Penang International Airport at 3.30 pm. The ten-day academic and spirituality trip was success. Alhamdulillah It allowed and enables the delegates to strengthen their ukhuwwah (brotherhood) each other. Allah says in al-Quran: 

         “O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of your in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted” (Quran 49:13)
