A NAS A WEEK - 22 RAMADHAN 1440

Peace!... This until the rise of Morn!  6220 [English Translation of al-Qadr, 97:5 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali]

Notes:
6220 - When the Night of spiritual darkness is dissipated by the glory of Allah, a wonderful Peace and a sense of Security arise in the soul. And this lasts on until this life closes, and the glorious Day of the new world dawns, when everything will be on a different plane, and the chequered nights and days of this world will be even less than a dream.

KAPPI@MEDAN TRIP - A MANY "FIRST" TO SOME

After the Keynote Address by ISDEV Founder, Professor Dr Muhammad Syukri Salleh.
The Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) recently organised the Konferens Antarabangsa Pengurusan Pembangunan Islam (or KAPPI) trip from 21 April to 25 April 2019 to Medan, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia known as KAPPI@MEDAN for short. A total of 30 students comprising of both RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Research) students and MISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Mixed-mode) students took part in KAPPI@MEDAN.
The delegates from ISDEV while waiting to board the plane bound for Kuala Namo, Medan.
ISDEV Director, Dr Shahir Akram Hassan led the more than 30 strong delegates in the KAPPI@MEDAN trip to participate in The 2nd International Conference on Politics of Islamic Development (ICoPOID 2019) on 22-23 April 2019. Besides ISDEV Director, ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr Wan Norhaniza Wan Hasan and other ISDEV lecturers and alumni consisting of Professor Dr Muhammad Syukri Salleh, Associate Professor Dr Zakaria Bahari and Dr Shereeza Mohamed Saniff accompanied the students too.
The concurrent sessions at ICoPOID 2019.
It was a packed five days four nights trip. The second and third day of the trip were dedicated to exposing students to present their research papers away from local soil at ICoPOID 2019. On the first day of conference, Professor Dr Muhammad Syukri Salleh gave a keynote address while the second day was the D-day for ISDEV students to present their research papers before the audience consisting mainly of postgraduate students of Universitas Medan Area (UMA).
A day to experience hands on between the wants and the needs based on Islamic worldview and epistemology.
After the academic exposure was accomplished, the fourth day provided a real social lab of the inner-self exposure to all. Known as the time to educate the heart, balancing between the wants and the needs, the delegates were exposed to the dynamics of the free market ideology. Here delegates were brought to the popular shopping bazaar of Medan known as "Pajak Ikan Lama" where all sorts of items of memorabilia can be purchased at such amazing prices either to be used for the coming Hari Raya or simply as souvenirs for the loved ones back home.
Tazkirah in sessions after the solat jemaah.
However all in all, it is the establishing of solat jemaah daily and the ensuing tazkirah sessions that can be dubbed as the highlight of this trip. Besides ensuring the physical intellectual development of the students, the spiritual aspects are not forgotten at all. The ukhuwwah was definitely felt as the delegates were fed with the practical aspects of Islamic concepts and principles from the tazkirah sessions that were delivered by ISDEV Alumni such as Dr Warjio, Professor Sukiman and Dr Shereeza as well as from Dr Shahir Akram, Dr Wan Norhaniza, Professor Dr Muhammad Syukri and Associate Professor Dr Zakaria, most of whom shared personal accounts of what ISDEV meant to them as students of Islamic development management.
The many hosts to the meal times for ISDEV delegates.
It was meant to provide an international exposure to ISDEV students. However this trip signified a lot of firsts for some of them - a first to be abroad, a first to take a flight, a first to travel without family, a first to present before a non-local audience, a first to try Indonesian food, a first to be away from Malaysian soil - all of which enriched them in honing their academic outlook and experience. Some students, only after the trip realized how fortunate and blessed their lives were in Malaysia.
It's time to say  "Till we meet again".
On the fifth day, after having lunch at a nearby restaurant en route to the Kuala Namu International Airport, it was finally time to bid a farewell to ISDEV Alumni members in Medan and friends of ISDEV from Medan. ISDEV delegates touched down at Pulau Pinang International Airport at about 8:30pm on 25 April, 2019. Alhamdulillah it was mission accomplished for KAPPI@MEDAN.

A NAS A WEEK - 15 RAMADHAN 1440

Ubaida ibn al-Samit reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came out to inform people about the Night of Decree (laylat al-qadr) in Ramadan, but two Muslim men were insulting each other. The Prophet said, “Verily, I have come out to tell you about the Night of Decree, but two men were insulting each other. Thus, its knowledge was removed and perhaps it is better for you. Look for it during the seventh, ninth, or fifth night of the last ten nights.” [Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 49. Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Bukhari]

A NAS A WEEK - 8 RAMADHAN 1440

O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you that ye may (learn) self-restraint.  188 [Translation of al-Baqarah, 2:183 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali]

Notes:
188 - As it was prescribed: this does not mean that the Muslim fast is like the other fasts previously observed, in the number of days, in the time or manner of the fast, or in other incidents; it only means that the principle of self-denial by fasting is not a new one.

KEMPI 2019: A MELTING POT FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

One of the posters on KemPi2019.
It's that time of the year when MISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Mixed Mode) students had to organize KemPI - an acronym for Kem Pembangunan Insaniah (Quality Human Development Camp). This year it was the turn of MISDEV 17.2 and MISDEV 18.1 students to organize KemPi2019 held at Pendang Lake Resort from Friday 5 April, 2019 until 7 April 2019. This year's theme was Untaian Hati Mahabbah Ukhuwwah (The Tying of Hearts, The Strengthening of Brotherhood).

After the gotong royong of helping the masjid committee with the upkeep and cleanliness of the masjid and the establishment of solat Jumaat,  MISDEV students, with the help of RISDEV students, proceeded with the theoretical and practical aspects of Islamic corpse management (pengurusan jenazah). A wonderful experience and sight to behold as the Pendang community listened, watched and gave some pertinent pointers, to fine tune the students' skills in handling a deceased Muslim.
A fun and relaxing morning with the tele-match among participants.
On the morning of the second day, before the tele-match began, participants of KemPi2019 had a warm up session in the form of Wan Tai Kong that was led by ISDEV Founder, Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh for the male particpants and Puan Marzizah Daud for the female participants.

A NAS A WEEK - 1 RAMADHAN 1440

Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa reported: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the month of Ramadan. When the sun began to set, the Prophet said to a man, “Dismount and prepare a barely drink for us.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, there is still daylight.” The Prophet said, “Dismount and prepare a barely drink for us.” The man dismounted, prepared the drink, and gave it to the Prophet. The Prophet drank it and then he said while pointing, “When you see the sun set and night has come from the east, then it is time to break the fast.” [Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 1855, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1101.
