AN EXCITING NEW SITE AWAITS ISDEV

The signs that says it all - a building for ISDEV
Finally the reality of ISDEV to have its own building is materialising. Alhamdulillah. This is the next step forward since the receipt of the Watikah from USM Legal Advisor, upgrading ISDEV stature from a Virtual Centre previously to the current Research Centre of Excellence (CoE) on May 2014. As a CoE, ISDEV has been operating independently from the School of Social Sciences, USM and is scheduled to operate within its own building by this year.
The building that once was used by the Unit Penyelidikan Ilmu Falak & Sains Atmosfera will shortly house ISDEV once the renovation works are completed
The operations of ISDEV in this new building is transitional while ISDEV awaits for its own mixed development building to be constructed based on an endowment scheme. The new building that is expected to house ISDEV, previously was owned by Unit Penyelidikan Ilmu Falak & Sains Atmosfera which is located between the Centre for Policy and International Studies (CenPRIS) and Graduate School of Business (GSB) buildings. The renovation of the building started in 18 September 2015 and is expected to be completed by April 2016.
Works in progress - physical transformation of the building to suit ISDEV needs
At the moment the renovation is supervised and coordinated by USM Development Department and the contractor in charge is Warisan Juta Enterprise. The renovation works include the interiors of the building at both the ground floor and second floor. With this new building and a much larger space area as compared to the present building (C05) that ISDEV is operating, it is expected that ISDEV members will be able to maximally use the facilities provided. It is ardently hoped and prayed that that the renovation works are carried out as smoothly and as efficiently as utmost possible.

A DELIGHTFUL START TO 2016

ISDEV welcomes 2016 with two joyous news; the extended service bestowed on ISDEV Director, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh and the appointment of new ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad.

Following the end of his appointment as ISDEV Director on 31 December 2015, Prof. Syukri has been reappointed as ISDEV Director for a duration of one year beginning on 1 January 2016 till 31 December 2016. In the meantime Dr. Fadzila Azni is ISDEV Deputy Director beginning 1 January 2016 till 31 December 2018. Her appointment is for the duration of three years.

Prof. Syukri is the founder of the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies, or ISDEV, founded in 1995 at the School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Initially known as the International Project for Islamic Political Economy (IPIPE), the name then evolved into Islamic Development Management Project (IDMP) in 1997, and finally, to its present name, Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV) in September 2005. In 14 May 2014, ISDEV finally received a Watikah from USM Legal Advisor upgrading its stature from a Virtual Centre previously to the current Research Centre of Excellence (CoE). As such ISDEV now operates independently from the School of Social Sciences. Prof Syukri has been at the pinnacle of ISDEV position since it was known as IDMP.
ISDEV Founder and Director - The wisdom Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh contributes to the excellence and success of Islamic Development Management

Prof. Syukri's service with USM dates back from 1981. In 1991 he was conferred with the title "Dr." upon the completion of his D.Phil thesis (Islamic-Based Development) at the revered University of Oxford, UK. His D.Phil thesis received the thumbs up from his examiners as no corrections need to be made to his D.Phil thesis. Upon his return to USM he was appointed in 1992 as the Chairman of the Development Studies Programme (now known as Development Planning and Management Programme), School of Social Sciences, USM. Two years later he became the Associate Professor of the said Programme until October 2000 when he received his full professorship, a title that he carries with him to this very day.

Meanwhile, being meticulous and having the ability to understand every struggle ISDEV had to face and overcome from ISDEV inception is the main factor that has enabled Dr. Fadzila Azni to be appointed as ISDEV Deputy Director.

According to Prof. Syukri, although the ultimate decision was made by the university, nonetheless as ISDEV Director he was given the opportunity to nominate those who are eligible to be his deputy as well as together strive to move ISDEV further forward as not just a Research Centre of Excellence but also as the National Reference Centre and Regional Reference Centre in the near future.
Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad, well known for her well mannered and calm disposition,
with her beloved son and husband
He added that all those who were nominated have the required qualifications and criteria however fortune seems to side Dr. Fadzila Azni. Personally he is pleased with this appointment as Dr. Fadzila Azni's fastidous attitude in all matters be it in administration or academic. She is also among the oldest member of ISDEV who had witnessed the stumbles and rise, the tribulations and successes thus  having the right acumen to understand ISDEV struggles, objectives, mission and vision.

Meanwhile, Dr. Fadzila Azni expressed her special gratitude to Prof. Syukri and generally to ISDEV members and USM for the trust bestowed on her to take up such a heavy responsibility. Dr. Fadzila  Azni started her career as ISDEV Senior Lecturer in 2011 after graduating with her PhD on the Management Methods of Islamic-based Development InstitutionsBesides her renowned "meticulousness" as described by Prof. Syukri, Dr. Fadzila Azni is also well known for her well mannered and calm disposition thus keeping up to her per name "Suekainah" or "Dr. Sue" among ISDEV members.

With such joyous news, ISDEV is confident that Prof. Syukri and Dr. Fadzila Azni will together be able to set new and higher goals for ISDEV members to meet and thus achieve greater success especially in the name of Islam.

Congratulations to Prof. Syukri and Dr. Fadzila Azni!

A PRE "FARE THEE WELL" BY MISDEV'14

By attempting and submitting their final exam papers on 29 December 2015, MISDEV’14 students (ISDEV Mixed-Mode Postgraduate - batch 2014) could finally feel elated because that last exam paper they attempted signified their studies for the Master of Social Sciences (Islamic Development Management) for three semesters was almost coming to the end.
A solemn and sombre atmosphere as it can literally be felt the heaviness
of the hearts to bid "fare thee well  ISDEV"
Thus, a simple “Pre Farewell and Restu Ilmu” was held at the Meeting Room of C05, ISDEV in honour of MISDEV’14. ISDEV Director, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh took the opportunity to deliver a short but heartfelt speech to all MISDEV '14 students.

In his speech, Prof. Syukri reminded and welcomed MISDEV'14 students who wished to pursue their study at the PhD level with ISDEV. He told them that they could make the application even though the final results had yet to be received. In addition, Prof. Syukri also encouraged MISDEV'14 students to continue writing, with publication in a book form in mind, as one of the steps to expose their research and writing to a wider audience and not to leave their writings only as research materials which are limited and referred to by ISDEV students only.
Prof. Syukri delivering his short but heartfelt speech for MISDEV'14 students.
Prof. Syukri also encouraged and welcomed MISDEV'14 students who were willing to contribute their energy, time and money to raise the endowment funds for Wakaf ISDEV although they were no longer students of ISDEV. In fact Prof. Syukri strongly encouraged each and every MISDEV'14 student to take a proactive stance on Wakaf ISDEV as he ardently believes that such effort will undoubtedly gain continuous rewards from Allah SWT. He  also took this opportunity on behalf of all ISDEV lecturers and administrators to apologize and request for "menghalalkan" (legalize or make permissible) anything that is overlooked which may perhaps be due to MISDEV'14 by ISDEV.
It is truly hard to say goodbye - as glaringly obvious by the look of Mohd Hilmi
At the end of the meeting, ISDEV lecturers were given a surprise with a poetry recital by MISDEV’14 Class Representative, Ustaz Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden on "Semusim di ISDEV". The words and the meaning of the poem, which is specially dedicated to ISDEV lecturers, touched everyone. The meeting ended with ‘bermaaf-maafan’ (greetings of forgiveness among one another) of ISDEV lecturers and MISDEV’14.

Here is an excerpt of a poem recited by Ustaz Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, Class Representative of MISDEV'14 dedicated specifically for ISDEV lecturers.

"SEMUSIM DI ISDEV"

Semusim di ISDEV,
kami dipertemukan dengan insan yang bertutur dengan hati,
melihat dengan hati,
mendengar dengan hati,
mendidik juga dengan hati.

Semusim di ISDEV,
kami dipupuk tanggungjawab menjadi pelajar,

betapa perlu permusuhan diminimakan.

Semusim di ISDEV,
kami belajar sunnah orang berjuang,
dilatih berjuang dalam derita,
untuk mengecapi bahagia.

Semusim di ISDEV,
kami nikmati betapa manisnya ikatan silaturrahmi,
belum pasti akan kami rasainya selepas ini.

Semusim di ISDEV,
kami mengenal Allah yang Esa,
menghafal kesemua 99 namaNya dan merasai diri bertuhankanNya.

Semusim di ISDEV,
pengajian, penulisan, pembentangan, penyeliaan,
permusafiran ke Ban Nua, Medan dan Brunei,
penganjuran program, penyembelihan, jamuan, solat berjemaah,

Wahai guru-guru kami,
walaupun cuma semusim dapat bersama,
ketahuilah bahawa kalian amat kami sayangi,
sama seperti ibu, ayah, abang dan kakak kami.

Duhai Tuhan kami,
peliharalah ikatan antara hati kami dengan hati guru-guru kami ini,
janganlah Dikau leraikan ikatannya.

Duhai Tuhan kami,
janganlah Dikau pisahkan pemilik ikatan hati-hati ini,
melainkan sesuatu yang pasti iaitu mati.

Terima kasih daripada kami, MISDEV14.
