In conjunction with the annual agenda of ISDEV, the 12th International ISDEV Graduate Workshop (INGRAW2017) has been scheduled to be held on 24 and 25 October 2017. INGRAW2017 is jointly organized by Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) USM.  

INGRAW2017 is welcomed for abstract and full paper submission for those who plan to pursue studies and Master or PhD level in any fields with special reference to Islamic perspective, those who are currently a post-graduate student and conducting Islamic-based research in any fields of study. Those who have completed studies at Master or PhD level in the year of 2016 or 2017 in any Islamic-based fields, and also thesis supervisors, lecturers and anyone who is interested.

KPI'17 & TADABBUR ALAM: A NEW UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE

 As a realisation on the development of human aspects who are both physically and spiritually excellent, the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Unversiti Sains Malaysia organised a hands-on human development programme for its MISDEV15.2 students (ISDEV Postgraduate Masters (Mixed-Mode) students). This programme is an annual programme that emphasizes on the practical aspect of human development as an enrichment to the theoretical aspects covered in the class in the third semester on Human Development (SVW502). At the same time, MISDEV 16.2 (ISDEV Postgraduate Masters (Mixed-Mode) students) has also organized a program called Tadabbur Alam in fulfilling the requirement of Islamic epistemology and Tasawwur course (SEW501). Both programmes were merged for the first time in ISDEV outdoor activities.

Kem Pembangunan Insaniah (KPI'17) was held from 12-14 May 2017 at KEDA Resort Bendang Man, Sik, Kedah. However, it is more special this year when KPI'17 was collaborated with Tadabbur Alam. The KPI'17 chose a theme of 'Membangun jiwa insani, Membentuk khalifah sejati' whereas the Tadabbur Alam that focused on Tasawur, Development and Community chose a theme of 'Membentuk Tasawur Melalui Tadabbur Alam'. A total of 38 people joined the camp comprised of ISDEV lecturers, ISDEV students and Airlangga University students (UNAIR).

KPI’17 consisted of four cores activities. First was Public Speaking which covered the delivering of tazkirah, khutbah, parliamentary debate and presentation. Second was for the brothers to practice their role as Imam and Bilal. Third, the Art and Ethics of Slaughtering Management and fourthly was the Art and Ethics of Corpse Management. All these four activities were conducted on the three consecutive days they were there. It is a blessing as students received valuable feedback and comments by the lectures as these activities enhanced their skills or knowledge on the fard ‘ain and fard kifayah at the same time.

For Misdev 16.2 Tadabbur Alam programme, the core activities were divided into two namely theoretical and practical. The theoretical part involved the presentation of Islamic Epistemology and Tasawwur that consist of a forum titled 'Tasawur GST', and the presentation regarding epistemology and Tasawwur of Slaughter management. Meanwhile, the practical part is the Tadabbur Alam that observed the nature resources such as bee, water, leaf, and soil.

Apart from both programmes organized by Misdev 15.2 and Misdev 16.2 students, there was also a surprise planned by those students to celebrate Teacher's Day in advance. A video and cake have been presented during the closing ceremony as an appreciation to all the ISDEV lecturers.

Both programme was successfully conducted due to the high commitment and relentless efforts by all those involved before, during and after the programme. All the programmes signified the hard work of everyone, ISDEV lecturers, students and staffs. It is hoped that everyone gained a lot of experience, knowledge and skills with resoluteness to be a more committed person spiritually and physically to Islam and fulfilling as a strong ukhuwwah (brotherhood). Alhamdulillah!

ANOTHER ACCOMPLISHMENT OF ISDEV STUDENTS

Alhamdulillah, Praise to Allah SWT for the success of two RISDEV (ISDEV postgraduate by research) candidates, Wafdi Auni Mohamed and Abdul Hanis Embong as well as one MISDEV (ISDEV masters by research) candidate, Roslan Hassan in their viva voce on 5th May 2017 and 18th May 2017 respectively. The two viva session on 5th May took place at C23, Social Science Conference Room, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and was divided into morning and afternoon session. Meanwhile Abdul Hanis Embong viva took place at Humanities conference room,USM.

The first candidate, Wafdi Auni Mohamed's viva voce was scheduled in the morning 5th May 2017. He defended his thesis on Islamic-Based Unity Government with Special Reference to Malay-Muslim Political Parties in Malaysia (Kerajaan Perpaduan Berteraskan Islam dengan Rujukan Khusus Kepada Parti Politik Melayu-Islam di Malaysia). Wafdi Auni was awarded a scale 1 for his show of confidence yet cool and very calm disposition in defending his written thesis.

The chairperson for the Board of Examiners was Professor Dr. Abu Hassan Abu Bakar from Housing, Building and Planning (BHP), USM. In the meantime, Professor Dr. Badlisham Mohd Nasir from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was the external examiner. His two internal examiners were Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh and Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi while Dr. Mohd Syakir Mohd Rosdi as his main supervisor.

On the same day, once again another MISDEV (ISDEV masters by research) candidate, Roslan Hassan added the excellent record to ISDEV whenhe also awarded with a Scale 2 in his viva voce on his research on Organizational Conflict Management Method from the Islamic Perspective at The Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) (Kaedah Pengurusan Konflik Organisasi dari Perspektif Islam di Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA).

The chairperson for the Board of Examiners was Professor Dr. Mahmod Sabri Harun from School of Management, USM. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr. Badlisham Mohd Nasir from Universiti Kebangsaaan Malaysia (UKM) was the external examiner. His internal examiners is Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi. He was supervised by Dr. Mohd Syakir Mohd Rosdi.

Meanwhile, on 18th May 2017, Abdul Hanis Embong has added the tally to ISDEV records of “Excellent PhD Thesis”. He had successfully defended his PhD thesis on The Application of Tafseer Methods in Islamic-Based Research Methods (Aplikasi Kaedah Tafsir Dalam Kaedah Penyelidikan Berteraskan Islam). His viva was held in the afternoon at Humanities Conference Room, School of Humanities, USM.

The chairperson for the Board of Examiners was Prof. Dato' Dr. Mokhtar Saidin, the Director of the Centre for Global Archaeological Research (CGAR), USM. Bombarded with questions from his External Examiner, Prof. Dato' Dr. Mohd Yakud @ Zulkifli Bin Mohd Yusoff, from Academy of Islamic Studies, University Malaya who was online in conference video call via skype and two Internal Examiners, Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad and Dr. Mohd Syakir Mohd Rosdi did not break his spirit in any way. He remained undaunted and was even able to answer all questions calmly. The examiners unanimously agreed to award him with scale 1. Abdul Hanis was supervised by Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi and co-supervised by Dr. Shahir Akram Hassan.

It is truly and ardently believed that apart from the efforts of the candidates and all parties involved, the do'a (supplication) from all ISDEV members has added to the blessings of such blissful news.

Tarbiyah Pengarah on Excellent Work Culture

On 19 May 2017, Associate Professor Dr Zakaria Bahari as the ISDEV Director delivered his Tarbiyah titled 'Excellent work culture' in the monthly series of Tarbiyah Pengarah. The programme was held at DKA, Universiti Sains Malaysia and was attended by lecturers, supporting staff and postgraduate students of ISDEV. The Exchange student from Universitas  Airlangga, Indonesia also had the opportunity to listen to the advice and guidance of the Director ISDEV in the program.

According to Associate Professor Dr Zakaria, a good culture can only happen through a good source. However, a good source would not be a good culture unless it is well used. In his speech, he stressed that ISDEV members including lecturers, supporting staff and students to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW in carrying out tasks within the scope of their work. He affirmed that the excellent culture could not be achieved without maximum effort.

Associate Professor Dr Zakaria urged the ISDEV members  to follow the way of Prophet Muhammad SAW. Through this steps, the ISDEV members are not only able to achieve the goals in Key Performance Index (KPI)  set by university, but also able to obtain intangible success. In implementing the way of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, the focus should be on akhlak, actions, speech and behavior of every ISDEV members. He stressed that the bonds of affection between ISDEV fratenity will produce a harmonious working environment and excellent work culture based on unity and team work. Both of these aspects are very important if the working goal is to seek the pleasure of Allah. To achieve that goal, Associate Professor Dr Zakaria outlined four important aspects to be embedded in every ISDEV members:
1. The correct intention - to convey the essence of truth, justice, success and peace of mind
2. Establish a working culture - perseverance and skill, feeling pleased with Him
3. The principle of in teamwork -Orientation organization, Shura, the balance and the right attitude to work
4. Basis of cultural excellent work culture from Islamic perspective- rights and responsibility
Besides, he also outlined a strategy to achieve excellent work culture among ISDEV members:
1. Understanding, respect and solidarity
2. Consistency beliefs and practices to establish trust and partnership organization
3. Recognizes the right to contribute to responsible and appreciate the efforts of others
4. Identify the roles and duties as contractual relations in order to reduce those opportunists.
Most importantly, this time Tarbiyah Pengarah that emphasized on the excellent work culture in ISDEV is fulfilled with brotherhood and consistency so that eventually could lead to the pleasure of Allah.

ISDEV-UNIVERSITAS TRUNOJOYO MADURA STRENGTHENING THE NETWORKING THROUGH SHORT COURSE

On 2nd May 2017, an entourage of lecturers from Universitas Trunojoyo Madura (UTM Madura), East Java, Indonesia paid a visit to Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) to attend a 2-days short course on Islamic economics and finance as well as Islamic development management. The short course was held on 2nd and 3rd May 2017 and organized by ISDEV as part of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between ISDEV and UTM Madura. The entourage from UTM Madura comprised of nine lecturers with the background of management and finance.

ISDEV lecturers with their expertise shared their knowledge to the UTM Madura entourage on Contemporary Issues in Islamic Economics - Micro & Macro (Associate Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari and Dr. Azreen Hamiza Abdul Aziz), Contemporary Issues in Islamic Development Management (Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh), Contemporary Issues in Islamic Finance - Celestial & Man-made Assets (Associate Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari and Dr. Murni Yusoff) and Contemporary Issues in Islamic Political Economy (Dr. Mohd Syakir Mohd Rosdi). 



With the aim of gaining more knowledge, UTM Madura entourage gave their full commitment and focus in all classes. ISDEV lecturers received an overwhelming response from the USM entourage as participants which made the discussion in the classes lively and intellectually and as well as spiritually stimulating them. From these classes, ISDEV lecturers took the opportunity to build further research collaboration potential that could be developed in the near future.

ISDEV Graduate Discourse in April 2017- 6 RISDEV Candidates Get The Nod

ISDEV Graduate Discourse for April was held for two consecutive weeks which were on 14 and 21 April 2017. Six RISDEV students were involved in the graduate discourse in presenting their PhD final draft thesis and proposals in front of ISDEV fraternity.

The first Graduate Discourse was held on 14 April 2017 at Dewan Kuliah A (DKA), which involved three RISDEV students presented their thesis proposals. The first candidate was Maizatul Mazwa Mazlan with her Ph.D thesis proposal titled "Kaedah Tarbiyah Rasulullah SAW untuk Latihan dan Pembangunan Dalam Pengurusan Insan". Maizatul Mazwa is supervised by Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad with Dr. Azrin Ibrahim as her co-supervisor. Her proposal is focusing on using the Tarbiyah of Rasulullah SAW as the method for training and human development.

The second candidate on that day was Shahirah Said with her Ph.D proposal entitled "Falsafah Sains Halal Dalam Al-Quran: Kajian Tafsir Al-Mawdu'iy". Shahirah Said is currently under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi and her co-supervisor is Dr. Mohd Syahmir Alias from School of Humanities, USM. In her proposal, the topic focused on how to examine the understanding of the concept of philosophy of science based dietary beliefs of the Al-Quran. It is important to secure the position of the Al- Quran which serves as a strengthening of faith, law and morality of human beings.

The third presenter was Nurul Farhana Yahaya. Her thesis proposal entitle "Perwatakan Manusia Dalam Tamthiliyyat Al-Quran: Kajian Tafsir Al-Maudhu'iy". Her thesis proposal focused on human character scrutinized by the parable found in the Al- Quran and analyzed using the interpretation of Al-Maudhu'iy. Nurul Farhana is currently under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi. Both Maizatul Mazwa Mazlan and Nurul Farhana Yahaya proposal's were evaluated by Dr Shahir Akram Hassan while Shahirah Said's proposal was evaluated by Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad.

The Second Graduate Discourse was held on Friday 21st April. 2017 at Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM), USM, The discourse was chaired by ISDEV lecturer Dr. Wan Norhaniza Wan Hasan. On this day, another three ISDEV’s Ph.D candidates presented their Ph.D theses' proposal and draft thesis. The first candidate was Norazilawati Md Dahlal was under the supervision of Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad. She presented her thesis proposal titled 'Konsep Pengurusan Kualiti Makanan Halalan Tayyiban' where her topic focused on the construction of a comprehensive concept of food quality including the technical aspects and the Islamic spiritual. Her final thesis was evaluated by Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi who gave his approval for the to proceed with the submission of thesis draft.

The second candidate was Nurul Izza Abdul Aziz. She is supervised by Dr. Fadzilah Azni Ahmad. Her thesis proposal titled "Kualiti Kesejahteraan Kakitangan Wanita Berteraskan Islam: Analisis Berdasarkan Sirah". Her study is focused on achieving the welfare quality of working women in Islam based on the story of women in the time Prophet Muhammas PBUH. Her thesis proposal was evaluated by Dr.Azrin Ibrahim who gave her approval for the proposal to proceed with the research.

The third presenter was Nur Ilani Mat Nawi. She presented her Ph.D draft thesis entitled "Objektif Dalam Kaedah Penyelidikan Berteraskan Islam: Kajian Berdasarkan Pendekatan Al-Biruni Dalam Kitab Al-Hind". Her draft thesis focused on concept used by Al-Biruni in his writing on Kitab Al-Hind where he studied on Hindu society. Her final thesis was evaluated by Dr. Mohd Shukri Hanapi who gave his approval for the to proceed with the submission of thesis draft.

MINI SYMPOSIUM ON ISLAMIC TOURISM 2017

The first Mini Symposium on Islamic Tourism 2017 was held from 13 to 14 April 2017 at the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MATIC), Kuala Lumpur. The mini symposium was organised by Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC). The focus of this symposium is on Islamic tourism and the aim is to gather Master and Ph.D students from all universities in Malaysia to present and discuss on their papers and research topics with fellow researchers, academicians and industry players. Industrial players, academicians, tour operators as well as students from all over Malaysia participated in this prestigious symposium including two members from the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Dr. Azreen Hamiza Abdul Aziz and Siti Zanariah Yusoff were the two privileged ISDEV members who participated in the mini symposium.


The mini symposium is officiated by YB Datuk Mas Ermieyati Binti Samsudin, Deputy Minister, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia.

The symposium begins with a keynote speech from Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Abdul Kadir Din from the faculty of Tourism Management, Universiti Utara Malaysia who is also the Board of Trustee of ITC. He presented his keynote on Muslim-Friendly Tourism: Potentials, Trends and Challenges. All participants were then divided into three parallel sessions in 1st day  of the symposium. Siti Zanariah Yusoff presented her paper on Positioning the Roles of Public Relations in Islamic Hospitality while Dr. Azreen Hamiza presented her paper on Muslim-Friendly Hospitality: The New Research Direction.

Apart of the main objective in sharing the new research areas in Islamic Tourism, during the 2nd day of the symposium, a panel discussion was held to discuss on the current issues and trends in Muslim Friendly Tourism (MFT). The panel for the discussion are Mr. Zulkifly Md. Said, The Director General of ITC, Assoc. Prof Dr. Khairil Wahidin Awang from Universiti Putra Malaysia and Tn. Haji. Ismail Hisham Ahmad Zambri, The General Manager, PNB Perdana Hotel & Suites on the Park. The symposium ended with a closing ceremony and presentation of certificates to all the presenters.

ISDEV TO JEMBER FOR ICSPGCS 2017

ISDEV delegates started a mission for 6 days from 1st April 2017 until 6th April 2017. The mission took place at Jember, Indonesia. En route to Jember, ISDEV delegates make a stop at Surabaya to make use of the opportunity of connecting flight from Jember to Surabaya. It is a golden opportunity for ISDEV delegates to meet Tuan Haji Muhammad Raffi Haji Shahir at Surabaya since he is also on his way to Jember as a keynote speaker for Conference on Social, Political, Governmental and Communication Sciences (ICSPGCS) organized by Faculty of Politic Social Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember.

On 2nd April 2017, ISDEV delegates arrived at Jember. Two ISDEV lecturers (Prof. Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh and Associate Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari) together with four RISDEV students (Wafdi Auni Mohamed, Mohd Syahmi Mohd Miswan, Mohd Haidzir Auzir, and Kamarulariffin Ithnan) participated in presenting their paper works in the ICSPGCS 2017. The title of RISDEV students paper works presented were:

1. Wafdi Auni Mohamed - " Kerajaan Perpaduan Berteraskan Islam: Kaedah Pembentukannya dari Perspektif Ta'awun dan Tahaluf Siyasi"

2. Mohd Syahmi Mohd Miswan - " Asas-asas Media Penyiaran Berteraskan Islam"

3. Mohd Haidzir Auzir - "Tasawur Socio-Politik Islam: Satu Analisis"

4. Kamarulariffin Ithnan - "Matlamat Akhir Pelaku Politik Islam: Analisis Konseptual Berasaskan Hadith-hadith Pilihan".

After the accomplished mission at ICSPGCS 2017, on the 4th April 2017, ISDEV together with Universitas Muhammadiyah Jember agreed to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their relationship for future planning in academic research as well as other collaboration in the near future.

ISDEV delegates continue their Musafir back to Surabaya for the invitation by Universitas Airlangga Surabaya (UNAIR) to attend a meeting between ISDEV Director , Associate Prof. Dr. ISDEV Zakaria Bahari and Prof. Muhammad Syukri Salleh with top management of the university. The meeting ended with various activites of expanding the networking and travelling around surabaya. Mission accomplished at Jember and Surabaya!

One of the RISDEV students shared "Throughout the musafir with Associate Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari and Prof. Muhammad Syukri Salleh for 6 days in Jember and Surabaya, I have received a lot of experience and lessons. This is because, ISDEV is just not a place to further a postgraduate studies but the intangible process of gaining new knowledge that could not be gain in the classroom.  A lot of efforts and Tarbiyyah are done in order to produce a good quality scholars who are experts in their respective fields. This time, this is a journey with some special things that touched my heart with tauhid, solah, knowledge and practice in striving for mardhatillah". - Mohd Syahmi Mohd Miswan.
