Alhamdulillah, Praise is to Allah SWT when five ISDEV lecturers were invited to Surabaya, Indonesia  for four days, recently to participate in one international conference and two international seminars.

The first was the 3rd International Islamic Development Conference (or KIPI-3) organized by Universitas Jember Indonesia. The two day KIPI-3 which started on 22nd Sept provided the opportunity for each ISDEV lecturer to present their paperwork with the theme on "Re-Discover Islamic Development Paradigm".

It was a truly historic moment, one that will be preserved in the annals of ISDEV, when ISDEV Director, Professor Dr Muhammad Syukri Salleh sat together with the top leadership of the two largest Muslim Organizations in Indonesia, Nahdatul Ulama and Muhammadiyah when they each presented their keynote addresses at KIPI-3.

Professor Syukri keynote address was on "Prinsip Dasar Paradigma Pembangunan Berteraskan Islam” (Basic Principles of the Islamic-based Development Paradigm). The other two keynote addresses were by Dr. KH Haidar Nasir from Muhammadiyah on "Peradaban Islam Bidang Politik dan Pemerintahan" (Islamic Civilisation of Politics and Government) while Dr. Ir. H.A Helmy Faishal Zaini from Nahdatul Ulama adressed on "Peradaban Islam Bidang Sosial dan Ekonomi" (Islamic Civilisation in the Field of Social and Economics).

Ther second was the International Seminar on "Exploring the Potential of Islamic Economic Success" organized jointly by Universitas Yos Soedarso and ISDEV followed immediately the succeeding day after the end of KIPI-3. Prof. Muhammad Syukri Salleh was again given the honour to deliver his keynote address. This time he chose to present on "Islamic Management of Poverty - A Critical Analysis of Contemporary Approaches" in front of participants consisting of economists throughout Indonesia and Malaysia. Dr. Mohd Syakir then took his turn to present his keynote address on "What is Islamic Political Economy?". The third keynote address was presented by Drs Ec A Rochim Sidik on Spiritual Leadership to Performance Syari'ah Managers in Surabaya.

For the afternoon session, Associate Professor Dr Zakaria, Dr Mohd Shukri and Dr Shahir Akram took their turn to present their respective papers.

As the duration of this trip fell on Dr Mohd Syakir's birthday, a simple birthday festive for him was celebrated among ISDEV lecturers. The harmony in ISDEV is possible through the strength of ukhuwwah amongst ISDEV lecturers.

HAINNUR AQMA RAMLI - RISDEV STUDENT GETS A NOD

RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by research) student, Hainnur Aqma Rahim presented her PhD thesis proposal in front of 20 ISDEV members on 29th September 2016. ISDEV Director, Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh and ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad, as well as ISDEV lecturers and students attended the programme which took place at D04, ISDEV open library. Aqma presented on "Faktor-Faktor yang Mempengaruhi Isi Rumah Muslim Berpendapatan Tinggi Berhutang" (Factors Influencing Muslim High Income Households to be in Debts).

Hainnur Aqma Rahim is currently a PhD candidate under the supervision of Associate Professor  Dr. Zakaria Bahari while Dr. Nur Asmat Ismail is her co-supervisor. All ISDEV lectures evaluated Aqma's PhD proposal and gave their views and comments on how it could further be improved.

Alhamdulillah, all lecturers gave a nod to Aqma's effort and agreed to let Aqma continue her research regarding the factors that influence Muslim high income households to incur debts.

Taha Mohd Omar, a RISDEV (ISDEV postgraduate by research) candidate has added the tally to ISDEV records of "Excellent PhD Thesis". He was awarded Grade 1 (the highest scale accorded to by Universiti Sains Malaysia for a viva) by the Board of Examiners during his viva on Monday, 29 September 2016 at C06 Conference Room, School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Taha or also known as PU Taha from the reality TV show 'Pencetus Ummah' on Astro Oasis in season 3 had successfully defended his Ph.D thesis on "The Islamic Capital Market: Analysis of the Shariah Screening Methodology by the Securities Commission of Malaysia".

As the culture in ISDEV prior to any viva voce, there are two routines that are strictly adhered to prepare students spiritually, emotionally, physically as well as intellectually. First is a mock viva which is usually held on the eve of the viva. Taha had his mock viva on 28 September 2016 at ISDEV open library.

The second routine is performing the solat hajat congregationally amongst ISDEV members. Solat hajat for Taha Mohd Omar was held on Friday morning. ISDEV members congregated at 8.30 p.m. at Masjid Al-Malik Khalid USM to perform the solat hajat together with a focused intention of seeking Allah SWT help and guide candidate for sitting his viva.

The viva started at 9.30 a.m. and the Board of Examiners took the opportunity to asked Taha with a variety of questions. Taha successfully defended his thesis after being fielded with questions and comments from the board of examiner. His viva was smooth flowing throughout. He showed his mastery of the subject and research as he was able to answer the questions posed with his strong grasp of his research throughout the viva.

The Board of Examiners consisted of the chairperson, Professor Dato Dr. Abdul Rashid Mohamed from the School of Educational Studies, USM with External Examiner, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Omar Mohammed from International Islamic University, Malaysia and two Internal Examiners who were Dr. Nailul Morad Mohd Nor from the School of Distance Education and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari from ISDEV. His main supervisor is Prof. Dr Muhammad Syukri Salleh and his co-supervisor Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad were also present.

5 RISDEV STUDENTS RECEIVED SCROLLS AT THE 54TH CONVOCATION

5 RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Research) students of the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) received their Doctors of Philosophy (PhD) degree at the 54th USM Convocation Ceremony on 24th October 2016.

The day has come to honour the hard work, effort and pains of students in their pursuit of 'ilm (knowledge). After going through all the obstacles for years, 5 RISDEV students, 2 of whom are from Indonesia, could proudly cast their smiles as they had succeeded in completing their studies at the highest level.

The 5 RISDEV students had graduated with two of them receiving nomination for outstanding thesis are as follows:

1. Mohd Syahmir Alias : Bebas Nilai Dalam Penyelidikan Siantifik: Kajian dari Perspektif Perkaedahan Penyelidikan Berteraskan Islam (Value Free in Scientific Research: Study from the Islamic-based Research Methodology Perspective).

2. Ahmad Nizam : Gaya Hidup Pengguna Muslim dalam Memilih Perbankan Syariah di Banda Aceh, Indonesia (Lifestyle of Muslim Consumers in Selecting Islamic Banking in Banda Aceh, Indonesia).

3. Azuar Juliandi : Budaya Organisasi Menurut Tasawur Islam di Bank- bank Syariah Kota Medan, Indonesia" (Organisation Culture According to Islamic Tasawur in Islamic Banks in Medan City, Indonesia).

4. Wan Khairul Aiman Wan Mokhtar : Tasawur Pembangunan dalam Kitab Sahih Al-Bukhary: Kajian Al-Hadith Al-Maudui'y (Islamic Development Worldview in Sahih al-Bukhari: Study on Al-Hadith Al-Maudui'y).

5. Musmuliadi Kamarudding : Konsep Pengurusan Kepadatan Manusia Berteraskan Islam: Kajian Kes Konsep Pengurusan Kepadatan Jemaah Haji Lembaga Tabung Haji di Mekah (Islamic-based Crowd Management Concept: Case Study of Lembaga Tabung Haji Crowd Management Concept in Mekah).

PENANG, 18 September 2016 – Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV) organised the first ISDEV Alumni Gathering or Perhimpunan Alumni ISDEV (PAI-1) a feisty celebration with the presence of over 100 participants among lecturers, ISDEV alumni and students as well as accompanied by their family members respectively.

Siti Fatimah Mohd Razali, MISDEV 15 (ISDEV Postgraduate Mixed-Mode) said "I gain a lot of experience through the sharing of alumni. Previously I only know the alumni by name but this program had given me the chance to interact with them directly".

According to Raudha Md Ramli, ISDEV Ph.D candidate who is also the committee member of PAI-1, "This program is successfully executed and put into practice the participants' understanding of the struggle and continuation in the battle of gaining knowledge and apply it to the real world”.

PAI-1 is filled with a variety of activities including the sharing of academic knowledge and experience, academic colloquium, recreational activities and socialise session among participants.

The 2-days 1-night PAI-1 was held from 17 September 2016 to 18 September 2016 at the Training Centre of Zakat (PULAZA), Balik Pulau, Penang. All in all, PAI-1 was fruitfully conducted due to the high commitment given by the committee members, RISDEV and MISDEV students, lecturers as well as ISDEV Alumni. Everyone blissfully contented and have gained a lot of experience from it. Alhamdulillah the mission of PAI-1 was accomplished. Thank you Allah!

THE 11TH SERIES OF INGRAW

 

The 11th ISDEV International Graduate Workshop was successfully held from 19 till 20 October at the University's Conference Hall (DPU), Universiti Sains Malaysia with more than 150 participants attending. The workshop started with the meeting of both the minds and hearts with the main intention of invoking on Allah SWT pleasures through the various working papers that were presented and commented upon.

The 11th INGRAW is a platform for postgraduate students to develop their writing and challenge their capabilities in developing new ideas in various fields for examples Islamic Economics, Islamic Banking and Finance, Islamic Management, Islamic Political Economy, Islamic Asset Management, Islamic Human Development, Islamic Research Methodology and many more.

The new Vice-Chancellor of USM, Professor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail, graced the modestly in the Official Opening Ceremony of INGRAW 2016 and 7 Edited book Launching with her presence and officially declared the commencement of INGRAW 2016. Professor Datuk Dr Asma Ismail congratulated ISDEV in its perseverance and dedication to see to the realisation of the 11th series of INGRAW, an achievement which she acknowledged is needed to be given due recognition, bearing in mind the uncertainty of the current economic background globally. She also added that a student need to be holistic not just in nature but need to balance with the entrepreneur skills as well as the advancement in technology.

In line with the spirit of Eiduladha, this great celebration which is iconised by the major obligations namely performance of the hajj and the highly rewarded nawafil act of sacrifice to gain the blessings of Allah SWT as well as to cherish the teachings of Allah SWT, ISDEV took this opportunity to celebrate Eiduladha via having a Qurban lunch during the last day of tashriq, on 15 September 2016.

This time around, the celebration of Aidiladha cum the Qurban lunch was held at ISDEV new building at D04. The Qurban lunch was held for USM staff in various departments who had contributed greatly in the process of moving and arranging the furniture, books and theses.

He gives advice for ISDEV fratenity on the inner strength that needed in every human. The inner strength needed are al-Khauf, al-raja’ and al-hubb.

The day before the Qurban lunch, the sacrificial slaughter of a cow on behalf of ISDEV members was held at Nur Afifah Abu Hassan’s (MISDEV13 student) house in Kampung Kelang Batu, Sungai Bakap, Penang on 14th September 2016, 12 Zulhijjah 1437h.

At 8.00 am, MISDEV15.1 and MISDEV15.2 students (ISDEV Mixed-Mode student batch 2015) gathered at Masjid Malid al-Khalid, USM and convoyed to the slaughtering place. The short briefing on the slaughtering activity was given by the Programme Director, Muhamad Shakir Abdul Sahood and programme coordinator, Dr. Mohd Syakir Mohd Rosdi. The slaughtering started at 10.30 am, followed by skinning the sacrificial slaughtered cow, cutting and dividing the Qurban meat.

At the end of the slaughtering event, all ISDEV fraternity enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by the villagers. The main purpose of this event was not only having a Qurban lunch for the guests but it was meant to provide a practical training of conducting the animal slaughter for MISDEV 15.1 and MISDEV 15.2 in line with their Human Development (Pembangunan Insaniah) course that they are taking this semester. The course requires them to do a slaughter of an animal. However, other ISDEV members and students who wanted hands-on experience on the process of slaughter were also welcome to participate.

4 Sept, 2016 - A total of 13 ISDEV members with 9 lecturers and 4 ISDEV students led by Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh pay a visit to Pulau Aman, Penang. ISDEV has taken a big step to enhance the networking and collaborate with IRM for sustainable and integrated humanitarian project for community development. The IRM team was led by its country Director, En. Zairulshahfuddin Zainal Abidin, with En Kamarul Halim Sakrani (Head, Relief & Programmes Divisions), Puan Siti Fadilah Mohd Hood (Senior Manager of Fundraising Division) Puan Sharlina Adnan (Head, Services Divisions), Datin Norelan Ismail (Senior Manager, charity Shoppe & Events Divisions), Nurbazilah Sulaiman (Manager, Funraising Divisions) as well as En. Azlan Shah Lazim (Senior Officer of Relief & Programmes Divisions).

Pulau Aman or geographically named as Aman island situated at the small island in South Seberang Perai, Penang is the location for the first ISDEV – Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) community development project. The community development project has three objectives to achieve. First, is to empower the community of Pulau Aman. Second is to foster a good relationship and to share the happiness with the community. Third is to make sure that the community does not feel left far from the development and society from the main land.

The trip starts as early as 9.45 am converge at Batu Musang Jetty followed by a 10 minutes boat ride to Pulau Aman.  Upon the arrival at Pulau Aman jetty, the team received a warm welcome by the principal of Sekolah Kebangsaan Pulau Aman, En Norman Jaafar. After a short briefing by En Noram Jaafar and En Sanusi, the chairman of JKKP of Pulau Aman,  ISDEV and IRM team were taken to visit the historic site of Pulau Aman which known as the Telaga Emas. Afterwards the team was taken to visit places of attraction in Pulau Aman such as the camp site, home stay and chalet, the oldest breadfruit tree in the Southeast Asia or kwon as sukun by the locals, seafood restaurants as well as community engagement with the locals.

It was a truly an overwhelming experience exploring Pulau Aman for its unique culture, nature and biodiversity as well as meeting the community. It was an awe-inspiring opportunity to be part of the community development in Pulau Aman. It is hope that this project will become a stepping stone for ISDEV and IRM in collaborating into much more projects in the near future.

DIRECTOR'S TARBIYYAH: "HONING THE TOOLS"

A leader who knows no rest - an enthusiastic Prof Syukri explaining about "Menajamkan Peralatan"

“Menajamkan Peralatan” (Honing the tools) was the topic of the “TarbiyyahPengarah” (Director’s Tarbiyyah) held on 26 August, 2016 at Lecture Hall A (DKA), School of Social Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). The monthly Tarbiyyah was delivered to the ISDEV fraternity by ISDEV Director, Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh.

Full focus were given to Prof Syukri in delivering the Tarbiyyah Pengarah in ISDEV Monthly Graduate Supervision

In his tarbiyyah, Prof. Syukri mentioned that ISDEV is not only a purely academic centre, it also acts as tools to make people realise the magnificence and wonders of Islam specifically in academics and in all aspects of life in general. Focusing on honing the available tools in ISDEV, Prof. Syukri said that all these tools are capable of changing ISDEV internally to form a strong congregation of wondrous outstanding characters displayed by ISDEV members and Muslims.

Qalb, ‘aql, nafs, lecturers, administrative staffs as well as all the facilities available in ISDEV are the tools that need to be sharpen. These tools could only be illustrated through good conducts in instilling the mahmudah characteristics and eliminating the mazmumah characteristics. Prof. Syukri also added that through faith and devotion towards Allah SWT is the way to avoid and eliminate mazmumah characteristics.

However, for academicians as well as administrative staffs, Prof. Syukri reiterated that the only way to honing these tools is through having skills and expertise in delivering ilmu (knowledge) sincerely in addition to strengthening the ukhwah, love and tolerance among ISDEV fraternity. At the end of his talk, Prof. Syukri concluded that it is important to increase efforts in honing the tools at ISDEV. He urges all ISDEV members, especially lecturers of ISDEV to sharpen their knowledge and expertise as well as to disseminate knowledge, teach and lead. The Monthly Graduate Supervision ended with a surprise birthday celebration organized by ABI for ISDEV fraternity that celebrate birthday on April until August. The Monthly Graduate Supervision was attended by lecturers, students and ISDEV administrative staffs.
