Ibn Mas’ud reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say, “Wretched is it for a man to say I have forgotten such-and-such chapter or I have forgotten such-and-such verse. Rather, he was made to forget.” [Source: Sahih Muslim 790, Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Imam Muslim].
An-Nawawi said, “It is prohibited to say I have forgotten it because that would suggest carelessness and negligence with the Quran.” [Source: Sharh Sahih Muslim].
