ISDEV FIRST MONTHLY GRADUATE SUPERVISION FOR 2019

ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr Wan Norhaniza.
On Friday 1 March 2019 the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV) Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) held its first Monthly Graduate Supervision for the year 2019. It was held at ISDEV Resource Room, D04 Building and started at 9:30am sharp. ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr Wan Norhaniza Wan Hasan provided an interactive platform for the students that day. She began the session requesting students to answer the question "What are the Challenges faced as a Postgraduate Student at ISDEV?" through one of the Learning Management Systems available on the internet - the Mentimeter.
Dr Wan Norhaniza summing it all up after Prof Syukri gave his point of view on the matter.
Using the Word Cloud answer scheme, a plethora of problems that seem to pull students to be out of focus on their studies showed up on the screen. The most pertinent challenge, the phrase that stood out among all the rest was - Time Management. Dr Wan invited ISDEV Founder, Professor Dr Muhammad Syukri Salleh, to advise students on this issue that plagues the students most. Interestingly Prof Syukri mentioned that it is not time per se that is the challenge but more so the Energy Management that matters. He said that as humans at times we would have set out to accomplish certain tasks for the day but as the day went by it was not time that we did not have in our hands but actually our energy level had depleted making it close to impossible to get the things that we have set out to do to be accomplished well that day.

Imran ibn Hussein reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The best of you belong to my generation, then those who follow them, and then those who follow them. Verily, after you will come deceitful people who cannot be trusted. They will swear oaths without being asked to swear oaths, they will make vows they do not fulfill, and gluttony will prevail among them.” [Source: Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2508, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2535. THE FIRST ISDEV DIRECTOR TARBIYYAH FOR DR SHAHIR

ISDEV Director, Dr Shahir Akram Hassan.
1st March, 2019 was a Friday that ISDEV Director, Dr Shahir Akram Hassan, would remember for a long time. Staying true to tradition, Dr Shahir Akram gave his first ISDEV Director Tarbiyyah  that day. It was held at ISDEV Resource Room, D04 and started close to twelve in the afternoon.
Some of ISDEV lecturers, staff and students are seen here at ISDEV Resource Room.
Choosing the title Perjuangan dalam Alam Ilmu (Striving in the Realm of Knowledge) Dr Shahir Akram started his Tarbiyyah with the simple reminder of the fact that all members of ISDEV became part of ISDEV not by mere coincidence but due to the fact that Allah SWT has ordained for it to be so.  Reiterating the point that he believed all ISDEV members are chosen by Allah SWT to be part of ISDEV, thus all members of ISDEV, whether the top management, the lecturers, the staff and definitely the students, each has a part to play in ensuring that ISDEV is the preferred center in doing postgraduate studies on development management pertaining to Islam.
The other section of ISDEV Resource Room.
The ISDEV Director Tarbiyyah was truly short but the points delivered were succinctly poignant nonetheless. Dr Shahir Akram also presented the various clusters in which ISDEV members are to work as a jemaah (a team) in areas such as in Islamic Development, Islamic Institutions, Islamic Political Economy, Islamic Tourism and Service Management, Islamic-based Research Methodology as well as on the sciences of Falak (astronomy).

A NAS A WEEK - 27 JAMADIL AKHIR 1440

And remember! your Lord caused to be declared (publicly): "If ye are grateful I will add more (favors) unto you; but if ye show ingratitude truly My punishment is terrible indeed."  1879

Notes:

1879 - The various shades of meaning in Shakara are explained in n. 1877 above. Kafara implies: (1) to reject Faith, as in ii. 6 and n. 30; (2) to be ungrateful for mercies and favours received, as here; (3) to resist Allah or Faith, as in iii. 13; (4) to deny (the Signs of Allah), as in iii. 21, or deny the mission of Messengers, as in xiv. 9. Kafir in the most general sense may be translated "Unbeliever".

CHALLENGING THE THEORY OF BEHAVIOUR

Ustaz Shazalie Hirman (seated - second from left) pose with his panel of examiners.
"A noble and brave attempt", as expressed by the external examiner during ISDEV first viva voce for the year 2019. RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Research) student, Shazalie Hirman bin Ahmad Najib's viva voce took place on 27 February, 2019. The viva started at 9:30am at the Conference Room (C23) of the School of Social Sciences.
Shazalie listening to the question posed by one of the examiners.
Shazalie had to go through a gruelling 3-hour session to defend his PhD Thesis on Niat Bertingkah Laku Berteraskan Islam dalam Teori Tingkah Laku (Intention in Islamic-based Behaviour in the Theory of Behaviour).
ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr Wan Norhaniza asked Shazalie to state the novelty of his PhD research.
True to ISDEV traditions, a mock viva was held two days prior at ISDEV Resource Room. ISDEV lecturers and students were there to bombard Shazalie with questions on his PhD Thesis, purposely trying to shake his ground, to prepare him mentally and physically for the actual day. Shazalie received a lot of pointers - the do's and don't during a viva from ISDEV lecturers that afternoon.

A group photo session after the solat hajat was done taken outside ISDEV Surau building.
The day of the viva itself, ISDEV male members met at 8:45am to perform the solat hajat together (in jama'ah) at ISDEV Surau building. This is another tradition of ISDEV that is done without fail, a few moments before the viva session starts for any RISDEV student, where invocation is made to Allah SWT to provide the best result for the candidate.
Prof Syukri posing a question to Shazalie during the mock viva.
Alhamdulillah Syazalie passed his viva with a Scale of 2. His panel of examiners consisted of  the chairperson, Professor Dr Ruslan Rainis from the School of Humanities, External Examiner, Associate Professor Dr Ahmad Azrin Adnan from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) and two internal examiners, Associate Professor Dr Zakaria Bahari and Dr Azrin Ibrahim. Shazalie is the first PhD student for ISDEV Director, Dr Shahir Akram Hassan in his capacity as the main supervisor while Shazalie's co-supervisor is Dr. Izzal Asnira bt Zolkepli from the School of Communications.

Alhamdulillah and Congratulations Shazalie!

A NAS A WEEK - 13 JAMADIL AKHIR 1440

And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands their fathers their husbands' fathers their sons their husbands' sons their brothers or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons or their women or the slaves whom their right hands possess or male servants free of physical needs or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah that ye may attain Bliss.  2984   2985   2986   2987

Notes:

2984The need for modesty is the same in both men and women. But on account of the differentiation of the sexes in nature, temperaments, and social life, a greater amount of privacy is required for women than for men, especially in the matter of dress and the uncovering of the bosom.

2985 - Zinat means both natural beauty and artificial ornaments. I think both are implied here, but chiefly the former. The woman is asked not to make a display of her figure except to the following classes of people: (1) her husband, (2) her near relatives whom a certain amount of neglige is permissible; (3) her women, (4) slaves, male and female, as they would be in constant attendance; but this item would now be blank, with the abolition of slavery; (5) men who are free from sexual desire and who usually frequent the houses; and (6) infants or small children before they get a sense of sex. Cf. also xxxiii. 59.

2986 - It is one of the tricks of showy or unchaste women to tinkle their ankle ornaments, to draw attention to themselves,

2987 - While all these details of the purity and good form of domestic life are being brought to our attention, we are clearly reminded that the chief object we should hold in view is our spiritual welfare. All our brief life on this earth is a probation, and we must make our individual, domestic, and social life all contribute to our holiness, so that we can get the real success and bliss which is the aim of our spiritual endeavor.

Those who believe and work righteousness for them is forgiveness and a sustenance most generous2829 [Translation of al-Hajj, 22: 50 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali]

PROF SYUKRI: EMBEDDING ISLAM IN NATION'S DEVELOPMENT

Prof Syukri at KITA.
On 24 January, 2019 Professor Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh was at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). He was there on invitation by the Institute of Ethnic Studies (KITA) to present and share his views at the Bengkel Acuan Islam Dalam Kehidupan Muslim di Malaysia (Workshop on the Islamic Mould in the Lives of the Muslims in Malaysia) organised by KITA. The workshop which started at 10am was chaired by Dr. Azlina Abdullah (aka Dr. Lynn) from UKM.
Stating the choice to take if embedding Islam is truly wanted and needed.
His presentation topic was on Membudaya & Menyulam KeIslaman Dalam Pembangunan Negara at the Meeting Room of KITA, Tingkat 4, Blok Pentadbiran Kolej Keris Mas, UKM. Prof. Syukri started his presentation by stating the present development worldview that Malaysia is in. He then went on to state that within the purview of such current development worldview, it is highly unlikely that the culturalization and embedding of Islam into the nation's development can be achieved. He cited a few examples of the non-sustainability of the various Islamic-based development approaches experienced in Malaysia especially the top-down approach.
Prof Syukri explaining his stand to KITA members while on the right is Dr. Lynn.
According to Prof Syukri, through his empirical research and analysis,  culturalizing and embedding Islam can only be holistically carried out when the mould of the development closely follows that of the Islamic worldview. This has been achieved. However most of these can be found at the grassroot's or at the organisational level as proven in Indonesia and Thailand.
Prof Syukri seen here with Ann Wan Seng (centre) and Prof. Dato' Teo Kok Seng (right).
Besides Prof Syukri, the other panelists for the second part of the morning session was Prof. Dato’ Dr. Teo Kok Seng. and Mr. Ann Wang Seng.

ISDEV PLAYS HOST TO STUDENTS FROM NORWAY

An all meaningful engagement between ISDEV members and her guests from Norway.
The Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV) was host to 37 undergraduate students led by Professor Dr. Levi Geir Eidhamar from the University of Agder, Norway. They were here at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) on Tuesday, 22 January, 2019 for the 11th Annual Lecture Series on Contemporary Islam in Malaysia. It was part of the students' learning experience to know and understand about various religions that exist in this world.
The Norwegian students diligently writing down some notes from the lecture.
For 11 consecutive years, Prof Levi has continuously brought his students to ISDEV to have an insight and learn more about Islam as a religion and the issues that Muslims are facing contemporaneously especially here in Malaysia. As usual, there were two lectures lined-up for ISDEV guests from Norway as well as for ISDEV members.
Ustaz Dr Mohammad Nidzam, a TV personality as well.
The first lecture was given by Ustaz Dr Mohammad Nidzam bin Abdul Kadir from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) who is the author of "Fiqah Hubungan Etnik". His session started a little after 9:30am, after the usual opening with the nasyeed of the 99 beautiful names of Allah SWT followed by the recitation of Ummu al-kitab al-Fatihah and a doa recital. Dr Mohammad Nidzam, who appears regularly on various TV religious programmes, spoke on the "The Fiqh of Ethnic Relations" to the audience.
A very captivating and engaging talk by Tuan Haji Kamarudin.
The second lecture was by Tuan Haji Kamarudin bin Abdullah, President and Founder of Islamic Propagation Society International (IPSI). With a title on "An Islamic Insight on the Unity of Mankind", a seasoned speaker and well-known Islamic figure in disseminating information and the truth about Islam, himself being a revert to Islam at the age of 18, was able to get the audience involved by sharing his knowledge and experience. His organization, IPSI, also made it a point to distribute to everyone from Norway a copy of "The Meaning of the Holy Qur'an".
The halaqah-like session held in the masjid.
After lunch, ISDEV guests from Norway were then brought to Masjid Al Malik Khalid, USM to witness how do Muslims go about with their obligatory prayers in a jema'ah (congregationally). Zuhur was at 1:32pm that day and so they arrived at the masjid well before time. The male students had a halaqah-like session after seeing how the Muslims establish their solat zuhur.
A RISDEV student (left) helping one of the students with the headscarf.
In the meantime, the female students were helped in donning the headscarf and some even wore the jubah (long dresses) that were provided by RISDEV (ISDEV postgraduate by research) students. Prof Levi commented that ISDEV had "made a fantastic programme, and I really look forward to come back next year! Thanks on behalf of all the students". The feeling is so mutual, Prof Levi. ISDEV too looks forward to hosting you, with your new batch of students, for the 12th time, in shaa Allah (with Allah SWT will) next year.
Inspired by Surah al-Hujurat verse 13: From different cultures and religions - a way to get to know one another better.
