A WEEK WITH PROFESSOR ATAUL HUQ PRAMANIK

The Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) through the collaboration with the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) was recently given the golden opportunity to host Professor Ataul Huq Pramanik from 15 April, 2019 until 19 April, 2019. Professor Huq currently serves as a Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Islamic Economics, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

ISDEV ensured that the week long stay of Prof. Ataul Huq at ISDEV was lined up with academic and intellectual programme that not only benefitted ISDEV members but the USM community as well. He addressed ISDEV fraternity every single day that he was at ISDEV.

On Tuesday, for the weekly ISDEV Tuesday Study Session, ISDEV provided a Special Sharing Session by Prof Ataul Huq. A very up close and personal session it proved to be as Prof. Ataul Huq shared about his past scholarly experience and intellectual journey.

The next was a closed lecture for ISDEV students in which Prof Ataul Huq talked about the Distribution of Wealth in Islamic Economics. His talk touched upon the need to understand the concept of distribution and the concept of how wealth is created in Islam before one can understand the dynamism of distribution of wealth in Islamic economics.

The Public Lecture

Prof Atauk Huq's fourth day at ISDEV was reserved as an exclusive session with ISDEV lecturers. The closed door meet at the Meeting Room of ISDEV started at three that afternoon. In this session Prof Ataul Huq spoke passionately about his past and the need for competition based on the demography profile of Bangladesh, the country which he hails from.

The climax of his stay at ISDEV was the Public Lecture on Revisiting Islamization of Economics held on his last day. ISDEV Resource Room was filled up well before 9:30am that day.The Public lecture was overwhelmingly well attended, with students and staff from outside ISDEV taking the opportunity to hear from the guru on development economics. 

KEMPI 2019: A MELTING POT FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

It's that time of the year when MISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Mixed Mode) students had to organize KemPI - an acronym for Kem Pembangunan Insaniah (Quality Human Development Camp). This year it was the turn of MISDEV 17.2 and MISDEV 18.1 students to organize KemPi2019 held at Pendang Lake Resort from Friday 5 April, 2019 until 7 April 2019. This year's theme was Untaian Hati Mahabbah Ukhuwwah (The Tying of Hearts, The Strengthening of Brotherhood).

The participants of KemPi2019, consisted of six ISDEV lecturers, three RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Research) students and 16 MISDEV students. A few ISDEV lecturers were there with their family members. The three days two nights KemPi2019 started with a community engagement programme with the community of Pendang, Kedah Darul Aman at Masjid Tok Guru Haji Aziz Pendang.

After the gotong royong of helping the masjid committee with the upkeep and cleanliness of the masjid and the establishment of solat Jumaat,  MISDEV students, with the help of RISDEV students, proceeded with the theoretical and practical aspects of Islamic corpse management (pengurusan jenazah). A wonderful experience and sight to behold as the Pendang community listened, watched and gave some pertinent pointers, to fine tune the students' skills in handling a deceased Muslim.

On the morning of the second day, before the tele-match began, participants of KemPi2019 had a warm up session in the form of Wan Tai Kong that was led by ISDEV Founder, Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh for the male particpants and Puan Marzizah Daud for the female participants.

For the afternoon session that day was a debate competition followed by the theory and practical aspects of slaughtering. This year, students get to learn the art of slaughtering the Nigerian style. As in the previous years it was compulsory for the male MISDEV students to slaughter at least one chicken while option was given to female students to slaughter.

The night on the second day was a relaxed and enjoyable one. Students prepared a few performances and presented hand made souvenirs for all ISDEV lecturers whilst enjoying the BBQ chickens which were slaughtered earlier that day. There was also a special performance by the three RISDEV students from Nigeria. They composed a poem (nasyeed) in the Arabic Language with the English translation read out. All ISDEV lecturers were mentioned in the poem describing briefly some of their attribute.

For the last day of KemPi2019, there was the horse riding session for all participants at the nearby equestrian centre. Besides riding and being up close with the horses, there were snakes too for participants to touch and take photo with.

All in all KemPi2019 proved to be a success as it had successfully met the objectives set. Besides gaining a better understanding an refinement of fardh ain (personal obligations) and fardh kifayah (communal obligations), the bond of brotherhood among ISDEV members were proactively strengthened. Prof Syukri in his congratulatory note while summing up KemPi2019 stating that it proved to be a suitable melting pot for postgraduate students of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

A NAS A WEEK - 1 RAMADHAN 1440

Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa reported: We were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, during the month of Ramadan. When the sun began to set, the Prophet said to a man, “Dismount and prepare a barely drink for us.” The man said, “O Messenger of Allah, there is still daylight.” The Prophet said, “Dismount and prepare a barely drink for us.” The man dismounted, prepared the drink, and gave it to the Prophet. SEXUAL HARASSMENT AWARENESS PROGRAMME IN THE WORKPLACE

The Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) received an invitation from the Registrar's Office for all ISDEV lecturers, staff and students to attend the Sexual Harrasment Awareness Programme in the Workplace. The programme was held to provide knowledge and create awareness on what tantamount to sexual harassment as well as the steps needed to be taken when one suspects that one is being sexually harassed. The programme was fully conducted by the Jawatankuasa Teras Gangguan Seksual (JTGS) (Main Committee on Sexual Harassment).

At 2:30pm on Monday 29 April, 2019, ISDEV doors was temporarily closed to give way for ISDEV members to be at the Banquet Hall, USM. The close to three hour long programme consisted of three sessions. The programme started with a talk by the Deputy Chairman of JTGS, Professor Dr Noraida Endut who is also the Director of the Centre for Research on Women and Gender (KANITA), USM. She prepared a short skit, read by a few ISDEV members, to explain the basic elements and understanding of sexual harassment.

Thereafter, Chairman of JTGS, Professor Dr Hajar Abdul Rahim, from the English Language Studies Department, School of Humanities, USM briefed about JTGS and the procedures in the form of a flow chart involved when a staff lodge a report on being sexually harassed at one's workplace. The final session was a forum of three panels consisting of USM Legal Advisor Dr. Khairul Anuar bin Che Azmiand USM Ombudsman, Professor Dato' Seri Dr. Md. Salleh bin Yapar as well as of a member of JTGS, Professor Dr. Dato' Rashidah Shuib.

APRIL UPDATE: 7 RISDEV STUDENTS PRESENTED

Towards the end of March and throughout the month of April, 2019, the Centre for Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) a total of seven RISDEV (ISDEV Postgraduate by Research) students were given the thumbs up to proceed with the next level of their PhD theses. All presentations were held at the Resource Room of ISDEV Building (C04) and were chaired by ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr Wan Norhaniza Wan Hasan on three separate occasions.

For the first session, two RISDEV students defended their PhD proposal before ISDEV fraternity on Friday 29 March, 2019. The first to present was Tahir Alam who hailed from Pakistan. He prepared his PhD proposal under the supervision of Dr. Azreen Hamiza Abdul Aziz. Then it was Mastura Shamsudin who presented her PhD proposal that centred on areas of communication in leadership under the supervision of Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad.

The second session was on Monday 15 April 2019. This time round, three RISDEV students presented their draft PhD Thesis. The first to present that day was Nurul Izza Abd Aziz with Associate Professor Dr Aswati Hamzah appointed as the reviewer of her final draft PhD  thesis. It was followed by Ustaz Amir bin Mohd Nason with his final draft PhD thesis reviewed by Dr Azrin Ibrahim. The last to present that day was Siti Zanariah Yusoff whose final draft PhD thesis was reviewed by Dr Azreen Hamiza Abdul Aziz.

The third session held on the next day, Tuesday 16 April 2019 another two RISDEV students presented their final draft PhD theses. The first in the line-up that day was Abdalla Abdelrahman AlQahtani followed by Ustaz Kamarul Ariffin Ithnan. Their final draft PhD theses were reviewed by Dr Murni Yusoff and Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh respectively.

IRCIEF OF KUIS AT ISDEV

The Centre for Islamic Development Management Centre (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) played host to the International Research Centre of Islamic Economics and Finance (IRCIEF) of the International Islamic University College Selangor (KUIS). The three representatives from IRCIEF paid a short visit to ISDEV on Monday 15 April, 2019 from 2:30pm  to 4:30pm.

The delegation from IRCIEF, KUIS consisted of its Director, Dr Latifa Bibi, Encik Ahmad Yani Ismail and Cik Najihah. They were there on a mission to explore on the possibilities of various collaborations - academic and research - with ISDEV.

ISDEV Director, Dr Shahir Akram provided a short briefing as to the various programme and activities offered at ISDEV as well as current research and affiliated institutions of ISDEV both within Malaysia and overseas. The meet provided a good starting platform for both institutions to forge better ukhuwwah especially in terms of academic and research collaborations.

A NAS A WEEK - 23 SHA'BAN 1440

Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur'an as a guide to mankind also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So everyone of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting but if anyone is ill or on a journey the prescribed period (should be made up) by days later. Allah intends every facility for you He does not want to put you to difficulties. (He wants you) to complete the prescribed period and to glorify Him in that He has guided you; and perchance ye shall be grateful.  ^{192   193} [Translation of al-Baqarah, 2:185]

192 - Judgment (between right and wrong): Furqan - the criterion or standard by which we judge between right and wrong. See ii. 53 n.

193 - The regulations are again and again coupled with an insistence on two things: (a) the facilities and concessions given, and (b) the spiritual significance of the fast, without which it is like an empty shell without a kernel. If we relise this, we shall look upon Ramadhan, not as a burden, but as a blessing, and shall be duly grateful for the lead given to us in this matter.

UIN RADEN INTAN LAMPUNG VISITS ISDEV

On Thursday 28 March, 2019 ISDEV was honoured to play host to an academic visit of delegates from Universitas Islam Negeri Raden Intan, Lampung (UIN Raden Intan), Indonesia. Professor Tulus Suryanto, Head of the Studi Magister Ekonomi Syariah, UIN Raden Intan. Before the formal session began that day, ISDEV visitors were treated with a hefty breakfast to welcome them that morning to the Centre of Islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV) specifically and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in general. Alhamdulillah.

There were two parts in the visit. The first part was held at the Conference Room (C23) of the School of Social Sciences at 9:00am. Exhibiting ISDEV's tradition and culture, the session started with the nasyeed of asma al husna (beautiful names of Allah SWT) followed by the recitation of ummu al kitab Al-Fatihah. To welcome the visitors from Lampung Indonesia, besides ISDEV Director, Dr Shahir Akram Hassan and ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr Wan Norhaniza Wan Hasan other ISDEV lecturers and students were also present to play host to them. The first part was chaired by MISDEV 18.1 (ISDEV Postgraduate by Mixed-Mode) student, Khuzaidah binti Mohd. ISDEV Director gave his welcoming remarks and introduced ISDEV to the delegates.

Thereafter Professor Tulus shared his experience and expertise on publication in a SCOPUS indexed article. To him it is a rtaher simple matter. In his humble opinion it starts with writing as a passion. The ability to translate all that one experienced, even minor ones, into the written form is a good beginning to getting articles published in a SCOPUS indexed journal later.

The turnout at C23 shows the commitment of ISDEV in hosting the guests from UIN Raden Intan.

During the second part, the postgraduate students of Lampung had the chance to ask more details and up and up close to their fellow students of ISDEV while the lecturers had a closed-door informal discussion in the spirit of Surah al-Hujurat verse 13 which is with the niat to know each other better. The session was well spent as the ISDEV visitors discussed about various opportunities available for academic exchange, research collaboration and more. The session also provided a good platform for delegates of UIN Raden Intan to inivite ISDEV lecturers over to Lampung, whose natural beauty is still amazingly relatively untouched as opposed to many modern cities that showcase man-made structures.

MONTHLY GRADUATE SUPERVISION: IT'S ALL ABOUT JEPeM

For the month of March, 2019 ISDEV Monthly Graduate Supervision was held on the third Friday of the month corresponding with the 22nd day. The chosen topic for this month's lecture was on the Human Research Ethics Committee of Universiti Sains Malaysia (JEPeM) Approval in Postgraduate Research delivered by ISDEV Lecturer, Dr Fadzila Azni Ahmad.

As usual the session started at 9:30am with the invocation of the 99 beautiful names of Allah SWT (asma' al husna) followed by the recitation of umm al kitab Surah al-Fatihah (The Opening) at ISDEV Resource Room, D04 ISDEV Building. 

Both MISDEV and RISDEV female students attended the lecture that day.

The lecture covered four main areas. First Dr Fadzila Azni gave an overview on JEPeM and shared with ISDEV students, both MISDEV (Mixed-Mode ISDEV Postgraduate) and RISDEV (Research Mode ISDEV Postgraduate) students related issues pertaining to the application for JEPeM and the implications to their research. Lastly students are to be mindful and assess "To Have or Not to Have" whether their research falls within the purview of JEPeM as it is advisable to get JEPeM's approval early so as to prevent any hitches when they are ready to proceed especially with the empirical phase of their research.

A NAS A WEEK - 9 SHA'BAN 1440

It is not righteousness that ye turn your faces toward East or West; but it is righteousness to believe in Allah and the Last Day and the Angels and the Book and the Messengers; to spend of your substance out of love for Him for your kin for orphans for the needy for the wayfarer for those who ask and for the ransom of slaves; to be steadfast in prayer and practice regular charity; to fulfil the contracts which ye have made; and to be firm and patient in pain (or suffering) and adversity and throughout all periods of panic. Such are the people of truth the Allah-fearing.  ^{177   178   179   180   181} [Translation of al-Baqarah, 2: 177 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.]

Notes:

177 -  As if to emphasise again a warning against deadening formalism, we are given a beautiful description of the righteous and God-fearing man. He should obey salutary regulation, but he should fix his gaze on the love of God and the love of his fellow-men. We are given four heads: (1) our faith should be true and sincere; (2) we must be prepared to show it in deeds of charity to our fellowmen; (3) we must be good citizens, supporting social organisation; and (4) our own individual soul must be firm and unshaken in all circumstances. They are interconnected, and yet can be viewed separately.

178 - Faith is not merely a matter of words. We must realise the presence and goodness of God. When we do so, the scales fall from our eyes: all the falsities and fleeting nature of the Present cease to enslave us, for we see the Last Day as if it were today. We also see God's working in His world and in us; His Powers (angels), His Messengers and His Message are no longer remote from us, but come within our experience.

179 - Practical deeds of charity are of value when they proceed from love, and from no other motive. In this respect, also, our duties take various forms, which are shown in reasonable gradation: our kith and kin; orphans (including any persons who are without support or help); people who are in real need but who never ask (it is our duty to find them out, and they come before those who ask); the stranger, who is entitled to laws of hospitality; the people who ask and are entitled to ask, i.e., not merely lazy beggars, but those who seek our assistance in some form or another (it is our duty to respond to them); and the slaves (we must do all we can to give or buy their freedom). Slavery has many insidious forms, and all are included.

180 -  Charity and piety in individual cases do not complete our duties. In prayer and charity, we must also look to our organised efforts: where there is a Muslim State, these are made through the State, in facilities for public prayer, and public assistance, and for the maintenance of contracts and fair dealing in all matters.

181 -  Then come the Muslim virtues of firmness and patience. They are to "preserve the dignity of man, with soul erect" (Burns). Three sets of circumstances are specially mentioned for the exercise of this virtue: (1) bodily pain or suffering, (2) adversities or injuries of all kinds, deserved and underserved and (3) periods of public panic, such as war, violence, pestilence, etc.

SMILE - THE BASIC PRECURSOR TO ALLAH SWT HELP

It was the ISDEV Director monthly Tarbiyyah slot on 22 March, 2019 at 11am on that blessed Friday morning. Dr Shahir Akram Hassan, ISDEV Director took the chance to address all ISDEV members to be back to the basics - to smile.

According to Dr Shahir Akram in his Tarbiyyah entitled "Pertolongan Allah SWT Bersama Jemaah" (Allah SWT help is with the Team), he covered his address with the events that shook the Muslim ummah recently in New Zealand and about us all living in Post-Normal Times now. In such situations of exceptional times, there is a more of a need to seek Allah SWT help in all the endeavours that is done for the sake of Allah SWT. However one basic condition to Allah SWT rendering help to HIS servants, is the existence of a jema'ah (team). 

A reminder to all ISDEV members - smile.

Referring to one hadith after another about the conditions of the "akhir zaman" (end of time), one pertinent signs is the absence of love. Taking the cue from a hadith that states one basic way to show love towards one another in a jema'ah is to give salam and to smile. Thus Dr Shahir Akram announced that this culture of Salam and Smile should always be an inherent culture practised by all in ISDEV. With such practises, it is hoped that the team spirit in ISDEV is strong and that Allah SWT help is always at hand. Aamiin.
