Bersempena dengan itu, ISDEV telah meraikan 10 orang graduan Doktor Falsafah dan 26 orang graduan Sarjana Sains Kemasyarakatan (Pengurusan Pembangunan Islam) berserta ahli keluarga mereka dalam Majlis Graduasi 2018 yang berlangsung pada 23 Oktober 2018 di Dewan Bankuet USM.

Moga perjuangan ilmu dapat diteruskan di mana sahaja mereka berada selepas ini.

WACANA PENYELIDIKAN ISDEV - EKOENOMI POLITIK ISLAM DI INDONESIA

Pada 12 Oktober 2018 ISDEV telah menerima kunjungan Dr. Sri Herianingrum daripada Universitas Airlangga, Surabaya, Indonesia. Beliau telah berkongsi mengenai penyelidikan beliau - Ekonomi Politik Islam di Indonesia. Wacana Penyelidikan ISDEV yang disampaikan oleh beliau ini berlangsung di Bilik Sumber ISDEV darijam 2.45 hingga 4.00 petang. Selamat datang ibu Dr. Sri ke ISDEV dan ke Pulau Pinang.

SATU LAGI KEJAYAAN CALON PHD ISDEV

Pada 8 Oktober 2018, satu lagi viva calon Phd ISDEV Hainnur Aqma Rahim telah diadakan di Bilik Persidangan C23 Kompleks Sains Kemasyarakatan. Sebelum daripada itu, sebagaimana tradisi lazim di ISDEV - majlis solat hajat telah dilakukan bagi mendoakan kelancaran dan dipermudahkan urusan beliau dalam menghadapi viva. Alhamdulillah, Hainnur Aqma dengan tesis beliau bertajuk "Penentu Gelagat Isi Rumah Muslim M40 Terhadap Tujuan Berhutang Dari Perspektif Islam" dalam viva tersebut telah berjaya dianugerahi PhD dengan kelulusan pada skala 2. Tahniah Hainnur Aqma.

A NAS A WEEK - 21 MUHARRAM 1440H

Say: "My Lord knoweth (every) word (spoken) in the heavens and the earth: He is the One that heareth and knoweth (all things)."  ^{2666   2667} [Translation of al-Anbiyaa, 21:4 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali]

Notes:

2666 - Notice that in the usual Arabic texts (that is, according to the Qiraat of Hafs) the word qala is here and in xxi. 112 below, as well as in xxiii. 112, spelt differently from the usual spelling of the word in other places (e.g. in xx. 125-126). Qul is the reading of the Basra Qiraat, meaning, "Say thou" in the imperative. If we construe "he says", the pronoun refers to "this (one)" in the preceding verse, viz.: the Prophet. But more than one Commentator understands the meaning in the imperative, and I agree with them. The point is merely one of verbal construction. The meaning is the same in either case. See n. 2948 to xxiii. 112.

2667 - Every word, whether whispered in secret (as in xxi. 3 above) or spoken openly, is known to Allah. Let not the wrong-doers imagine that their secret plots are secret to the Knower of all things.

Aisha reported: There was no behavior more hateful to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, than dishonesty. A man would tell a lie when speaking in the presence of the Prophet and he would not be satisfied until he knew that he had repented [Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 1973]

A NAS A WEEK - 7 MUHARRAM 1440

O ye who believe! let not some men among you laugh at others: it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): Nor let some women laugh at others: it may be that the (latter) are better than the (former): nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames: Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness (to be used of one) after he has believed: And those who do not desist are (Indeed) doing wrong ^{[4929] [4930]} [Translation of al-Hujuraat (49:11) by Abdullah Yusuf Ali].

Notes:

4929 -  Mutual ridicule ceases to be fun when there is arrogance or selfishness or malice behind it. We may laugh with people, to share in the happiness of life: we must never laugh at people in contempt or ridicule. In many things they may be better than ourselves!

4930 - Defamation may consist in speaking ill of others by the spoken or written word, or in acting in such a way as to suggest a charge against some person whom we are not in a position to judge. A cutting, biting remark or taunt of sarcasm is included in the word lamaza. An offensive nickname may amount to defamation, but in any case there is no point in using offensive nicknames, or names that suggest some real or fancied defect. They ill accord with the serious purpose which Muslims should have in life. For example, even if a man is lame, it is wrong to address him as "O lame one!" It causes him pain, and it is bad manners. So in the case of the rude remark, "the black man".

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about which prayer was most excellent after the prescribed prayer, and which fast was most excellent after the month of Ramadan. The Prophet said, “The best prayer after the prescribed prayers is prayer offered in the middle of the night, and the most excellent fast after the month of Ramadan is the fast in Allah’s month, Al-Muharram.” [Source: Sahih Muslim 1163; Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim]

In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease and grievous is the penalty they (incur) because they are false (to themselves).  ^[34] [Translation of Surah al-Baqarah, 2:102 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali]

[34] The insincere man who thinks he can get the best of both worlds by compromising with good and evil only increased the disease of his heart, because he is not true to himself. Even the good which comes to him he can pervert to evil. So the rain which fills out the ear of corn or lends fragrance to the rose also lends strength to the thorn or adds strength to the poison of the deadly night-shade.

A NAS A WEEK - 8 DZUL HIJJAH 1439

Then when (the son) reached (the age of) (serious) work with him he said: "O my son! I see in vision that I offer thee in sacrifice: now see what is thy view!" (The son) said: "O my father! do as thou art commanded: thou will find me if Allah so wills one practicing Patience and Constancy!"  ^{[4098]   [4099]} [Translation of Surah al-Saffat, 37:102 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali].

Notes:

4098 - Where did this vision occur? The Muslim view is that it was in or near Makkah. Some would identify it with the valley of Mina, six miles north of Makkah, where a commemoration sacrifice is annually celebrated as a rite of the Hajj on the tenth of Zul-Hijjah, the 'Id of Sacrifice, in Memory of this Sacrifice of Abraham and Isma'il (see' n.2l7 to ii. 197). Others say that the original place of sacrifice was near the hill of Marwa (the companion hill to Safa, ii. 158), which is associated with the infancy of Isma'il.

4099 -  At what stage in Abraham's history did this occur? See n. 2725 to xxi. 69. It was obviously after his arrival in the land of Cannan and after Isma'il had grown up to years of discretion. Was it before or after the building of the Ka'ba (ii. 127)? There are no data on which this question can be answered. But we may suppose it was before that event, and that event may itself have been commemorative.

ISDEV-IIIT DISCOURSE SERIES 1: CREATIVE THINKING IN ISLAM: CONCEPTS AND ISSUES

On 18 May 2018, ISDEV with the collaboration from International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT) East and Southeast Asia had successfully organized the first ISDEV-IIIT Discourse Series 1. This programme is resulting from a good relationship networking between ISDEV, USM and (IIIT) East and Southeast Asia. The programme took place at ISDEV Resource Room, USM from 9.30am to 12.00pm.

In this first ISDEV-IIIT discourse, the invited speaker was Professor Dr. Jamal Ahmad Bashier Badi from Kuliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge & Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Prof. Dr. Jamal gave his talk on Creative Thinking in Islam: Concept and Issues.

Overall, from the reaction and gleeful faces exhibited by the participants, the programme had indeed provided satisfactory information to their queries and apprehensiveness pertaining to the topic tackled by the speaker. ISDEV LECTURE SERIES: UNIVERSITI COLLEGE BESTARI AND BANK ISLAM MALAYSIA BERHAD

ISDEV Lecture Series with UCB

On 13 April 2018, ISDEV had successfully organized two ISDEV Lecture Series on Pengalaman Pembiayaan Wakaf di Universiti College Bestari (UCB): Cabaran dan Halangan and Islamic Banking Operations: Issues and Challenges . The programme is resulting from the signing of an Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti College Bestari and good networking between ISDEV, USM and Bank islam Malaysia Berhad. The programme was divided into two sessions and took place at Lecture Theatre A (DKA), USM.

An inspirational thought and experience shared by YM Professor Dato' Dr Haji Tengku Mahmud Mansor, accompanied by Vice-Chancellor of UCB, Prof Ab Aziz Yusof and Associate Prof Dr Zakaria Bahari

In the morning session, the founder of UCB, YM Professor Dato’ Dr. Haji Tengku Mahmud Mansor is honoured to share his experiences in developing UCB through Waqf funding. His lecture received overwhelming audience from ISDEV fraternity as well as staffs from other schools and department in USM. YM Professor Dato’ Dr. Haji Tengku Mahmud is a prominent scholar with wide experiences in politics and non-governmental organization (NGO) involvement. This ISDEV lecture series resulting from the signing of an MoU between ISDEV and the UCB. 

ISDEV Lecture Series with Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad

Furthermore, in the afternoon session, the lecture series continue with the lecture by the Chief Shari'ah Officer Bank Islam Malaysia Bread, Ustaz Mohd Nazri Chik. This lecture outline the issues and challenges faced by Islamic banks and provide a better understanding on its operation as a financial and investment intermediary in meeting its ecumenic objectives. This lecture is also part of the Ilmu knowledge series by Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad.

Knowledge sharing session, Ustaz Mohd Nazri Chik shared the Issues and challenges on Islamic Banking Operations from the Shari'ah perspectives.

Overall, the lecture series had indeed provided satisfactory information to all queries and apprehensiveness pertaining to the two issues tackled by both speakers. ISDEV expressed our gratitude and hope that this series is able to continue in the near future, Insya-Allah.

O believers! When you are asked to make room in your meetings, make room, Allah will make room for you in the Hereafter. And if you are told to rise up, then rise up: Allah will raise to higher ranks those of you who have faith and knowledge. Allah is aware of all your actions [Translation of al-Mujadalah, 58:11].

ISDEV AT THE ISLAMIC RESEARCH METHODOLOGY WORKSHOP

On 22 - 24 April 2018, ISDEV members consisting of ISDEV Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari, ISDEV Deputy Director, Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad, ISDEV lecturers, Professor Muhammad Syukri Salleh, Dr. Shahir Akram Hasan, Dr Murni Yusoff, Dr Azreen Hamiza Abdul Aziz as well as ISDEV Alumni, participated in the Bengkel Kaedah Penyelidikan Berteraskan Islam (Islamic Research Methodology Worskhop). The workshop was held at the Centre for Language Studies and Generic Development (PBI), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Bachok, Kelantan and was chaired by Dr. Nor Hisham bin Md. Nawi. Dr. Burhan Che Daud, Director of PBI graced the modestly simple Official Opening Ceremony of the workshop with his presence and officially declared its commencement with the recitation of basmallah.

ISDEV Delegates at the Islamic Research Methodology Workshop at UMK, Bachok,Kelantan

The workshop was organized by the Centre for Language Studies and Generic Development (PBI), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan with the collaboration with the Centre for islamic Development Management Studies (ISDEV), Universiti Sains Malaysia. Among the objectives of this workshop three days workshop is to guide all researches in the social sciences and humanities field to benefit and understand the newly develop Islamic research methodology as the modern research method. 

The speakers - From top: Prof. Dr. Muhammad Syukri Salleh, Dr. Fadzila Azni Ahmad, Dr. Mohd Syahmir Alias, Dr. Abdul Hanis Embong, Dr. Shahir Akram Hasan, Dr. Nur Ilani Mat Nawi, Mohd Syahmi Miswan, Nur Sakiinah Ab Aziz, Dr. Nor Hanani Ismail, Dr. Azreen Hamiza Abdul Aziz, Dr. Murni Yusoff & Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zakaria Bahari.

In achieving this objective, participants were exposed to the various stages of Islamic research methodology for qualitative research focusing on the philosophy, research design, data collection and data analysis. The workshop also present the practice in Islamic-based research that are using quantitative research methodology with the conceptual framework, construction of instruments and data analysis. Even though the contemporary research method has been widely used in research nowadays, it is not possible for Islamic research methodology to stand out and become the prominent research method to be use in any Islamic-based research.
