A NAS A WEEK - 14 SHA'BAN 1439

[Fasting for] a limited number of days. So whoever among you is ill or on a journey [during them] - then an equal number of days [are to be made up]. And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] - a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]. And whoever volunteers excess - it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew [Translation of al-Baqarah, 2:184].

Thus, have We revealed to you O Muhammad, a Spirit (inspired Book - The Qur'an) by Our command: while you did not know what is The Book and what is the Iman (faith)? But We have made it (The Qur'an) a light whereby We guide those of Our servants whom We please; and surely you are guiding mankind to the Right Way [Translation of al-Shura, 42:52].

A NAS A WEEK - 22 RAJAB 1439

Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The roof of my house was opened when I was in Mecca and Gabriel descended and opened my heart and then he washed it with the water of zamzam. He then brought a gold basin full of wisdom and faith and after emptying it into my heart, he closed it up. Then taking me by the hand, he ascended with me to the heaven and when we came to the lowest heaven, Gabriel said to its guardian: Open! He asked who was there? He replied: It is Gabriel. He asked if there was someone with him. He replied: Yes, it is Muhammad. He was asked if he had been sent for and Gabriel said: Yes. Then he opened the gate. When we ascended the lowest heaven, I saw a man seated with parties on his right side and parties on his left side. When he looked up to his right, he laughed and when he looked to his left, he wept. He said: Welcome the righteous prophet and the righteous son. I asked Gabriel who he was and he replied: He is Adam, upon him be peace, and these parties on his right and on his left are the souls of his descendants. Those of them on his right are the inmates of Paradise and those on his left are the inmates of Hellfire, so when he looked towards his right side he laughed, and when he looked towards his left side he wept. Then Gabriel ascended with me to the second heaven. He asked its guardian to open its gate, and its guardian replied in the same way as the other guardian had said, so he opened it.”

Anas ibn Malik continued: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned that he found in the heavens Adam, Idrees, Jesus, Moses, and Abraham, peace be upon them all, but he did not ascertain as to the nature of their abodes except that he had found Adam in the lowest heaven and Abraham in the sixth heaven. When Gabriel and the Messenger of Allah passed by Idris, upon him be pece, he said: Welcome the righteous prophet and righteous brother. He asked: Who is he? Gabriel said: It is Idrees. Then he passed by Moses, upon him be peace, and he said: Welcome the righteous prophet and righteous brother. He said: Who is he? He replied: It is Moses. Then he passed by Jesus and he said: Welcome the righteous prophet and righteous brother. He said: Who is he? Gabriel said: Jesus the son of Mary. Then he went to Abraham, upon him be peace. He said: Welcome the righteous prophet and righteous son. He asked: Who is he? Gabriel said: It is Abraham.

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Then he ascended with me till I was taken to such a height where I heard the scraping of the pens. Allah then made fifty prayers obligatory for my nation and I returned with that and passed by Moses. Moses, upon him be peace, said: What has your Lord enjoined on your people? I said: Fifty prayers have been made obligatory on them. Moses said: Return to thy Lord, for your nation would not be able to bear this burden. Then I came back to my Lord and He remitted a portion. I again went to Moses and informed him about it and he said: Return to your Lord, for your nation shall not be able to bear this burden. I went back to my Lord and He said: They are five and at the same time fifty, and what has been said will not be changed. I returned to Moses and he said: Go back to your Lord. I said: I feel ashamed in front of my Lord. Gabriel then travelled with me until we came to the farthest lote-tree. Many colors covered it which I had not known. Then I was admitted to Paradise and saw in it domes of pearls and its soil made of musk.” [Source: Sahih Muslim 163, Sahih Bukhari 342; Grade: Muttafaqun Alayhi (authenticity agreed upon) according to al-Bukhari and Muslim]

A NAS A WEEK - 15 RAJAB 1439

Glory to (Allah) Who did take His Servant for Journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque whose precincts We did Bless in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the one Who heareth and seeth (all things) [Translation of al-Israa', 17:1 by Abdullah Yusuf Ali]2167   2168   2169

Notes:
[2167] Masjid is a place of prayer: here it refers to the Ka'ba at Makkah. It had not yet been cleared of its idols and rededicated exclusively to the One True God. It was symbolical of the new Message which was being given to mankind.

[2168] The Farthest Mosque must refer to the site of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem on the hill of Moriah, at or near which stands the Dome of the Rock, called also the Mosque of Hadhrat 'Umar. This and the Mosque known as the Farthest Mosque (Masjid-ul-Aqsa) were completed by the Amir 'Abd-ul-Malik in A.H. 68. Farthest, because it was the place of worship farthest west which was known to the Arabs in the time of the holy Prophet: it was a sacred place to both Jews and Christians, but the Christians then had the upper hand, as it was included in the Byzantine (Roman) Empire, which maintained a Patriarch at Jerusalem. The chief dates in connection with the Temple are: it was finished by Solomon about B.C. 1004; destroyed by the Babylonians under Nebuchadnezzar about 586 B.C.; rebuilt under Ezra and Nehemiah about 515 B.C.; turned into a heathen idol-temple by one of Alexander's successors, Antiochus Epiphanes, 167 B.C.; restored by Herod, B.C. 17 to A.D. 29; and completely razed to the ground by the Emperor Titus in A.D. 70. These ups and downs are among the greater Signs in religious history.

[2169] Allah's knowledge comprehends all things, without any curtain of Time or any separation of Space. He can therefore see and hear all things, and the Mi'raj was a reflection of this knowledge. In this and the subsequent verses, the reference to Allah is generally in the first person and plural. But in the first and the last clause of this verse it is in the third person singular: "Glory to Allah, Who did take His Servant..."; "He is the One...". In each of these two instances, the clause expresses the point of view of Allah's creatures, who glorify Him, and whose hearing and seeing are ordinarily so limited that they can do nothing but glorify Him when one of His creatures is raised up to hear and see the Signs. It is they who glorify Him.
